Dr. Herbert Shore Outstanding Mentor

This award is named for Dr. Herbert Shore, an AAHSA founder well known for having mentored many of today’s leaders in long-term care. A mentor is a listener, supporter, role model, nurturer and resource, as well as a trusted counselor, tutor, and friend. He or she has the ability to see another’s worth and challenge that person to see the same potential, while offering support, patience and enthusiasm, and guiding the person to new levels of competence. The person coached by the mentor is referred to as a protégé. Under girding the concept of mentoring is that seasoned professionals “pass the torch” to the new generation of practitioners by being available in a nonjudgmental system of one-on-one teaching, advising, motivating, encouraging, challenging and reinforcing.

The criteria for this award are: (a) The mentor is nominated by an individual or organization with close knowledge of the nominee’s qualifications and accomplishments as a mentor. (b) The mentor is licensed or certified in his or her discipline, if required, and demonstrates superior achievement in the field. (c) The submission shows the extent of the nominee’s experience as a mentor (how long, multiple protégés, etc.) and the productive, positive nature of the mentorship. (d) The submission indicates accomplishments of the protégé(s) that have been influenced by the mentor.
