Our theme for 2010 poses an ethical, philosophical, practical and thought-provoking question.  It is intended to stimulate a rich dialogue as we consider the varying needs of seniors and the models of service and care delivery that will be required to serve them.  Who Decides? is more than a question.  It is a shift in mindset – a recognition that the current landscape is changing, and as it changes, the role of everyone involved – from consumers to family members to direct care workers to CEOs and boards is evolving.

"Using Transformative Training and Development to Electrify Your Culture" ~ Christopher Ridenhour, Director of Core Competency Training, Liberty Lutheran Services, PA.

Christopher Ridenhour provokes audiences to consider how interpersonal relationships impact our Customer Service and/or Cultural Change initiatives.  Science, principles of Organizational Development, and lots of observational humor are used to demonstrate human motivations and behaviors in our Care Facilities.  Participants walk away with strategies and techniques that encourage engagement, accountability, and passion from both the front line staff as well as the facility's leadership team.  Among his areas of expertise, Christopher counts Change Management, Teambuilding, Diversity Education, Career Rejuvenation, and Staff Competency Development. You will be moved by well told stories.

General Session #2 Wednesday, June 16th

"The Ethics of Risk Management and Resident Choice" ~ Dr. Michael Gillette, President, Bioethical Services of VA, Inc.

Bioethical Services of Virginia, Inc. provides medical ethics programs and services. Bioethical Services was established in 1994 by Dr. Michael Gillette with three primary objectives. First, to provide assistance to healthcare providers, residents and families when they face difficult ethical issues and troubling healthcare decisions. Second, to work with hospitals, hospices, long-term care facilities community providers of services and managed care organizations in order to bring about an environment that is receptive to the discussion and consideration of ethical issues. Third, to provide educational programs to organizations in order to help people become more informed and thoughtful healthcare consumers. Dr. Gillette leads provocative and challenging discussions on the ethical issues our members wrestle with every day, including how to balance resident rights and community liability, or what boundaries communities should place on resident/staff relationships.

General Session #3 Thursday June 17th

"From Caring to Coaching: A New Role for Senior Living" ~ Dr. Roger Landry, President, Masterpiece Living LLC

Research on aging has dramatically changed our views of what is possible as we age.  This knowledge compels us to build on our current model of providing comfort, security, and care to older adults and to begin to bring lifestyle coaching skills to the relationship in order to facilitate the successful aging that is achievable.  Dr. Landry will also discuss the necessity for a supportive, facilitative environment in order for older adults to become all they can be.   Dr. Landry will review the stereotype-smashing research, explain what is realistically achievable, and detail a lifestyle coaching and environment building approach shown to be effective in facilitating a more successful aging experience.
